Venture Crew 759
Notes for August 16, 2009 meeting
Created August 18, 2009
Minutes from June 7, 2009 meeting: Meeting was held by the scouts the “Maxum” while skiing/ wake boarding. Minutes were not created.
Event recap:
Those that attended the skiing wake boarding trip had a good time.
Upcoming Events:
1) Wake boarding/ skiing/ tubing: The Millers Island camping trip was down sized to a day water skiing/ wake boarding/ tubing event and it going to take place on Saturday August 29. Time TBD. The last time we met at 1pm at Dale’s parents house (2700 Bay Drive, Baltimore MD 21219). Cost is approximately $10 per person; essentially we will be splitting the cost of the wake board and gas. We need a count of people planning to attend.
2) Basketball/flag football/ soccer Tournament: Event is postponed indefinitely. We may consider something like this in the future
3) White Water Rafting: October 9-11. Crew viewed brochures and opted to postpone a decision until the next meeting.
4) Shadow Lands: September 20 time TBD. None scout gathering.
5) Spaghetti dinner: We are still looking at Oct 17. Todd is going to confirm date with Mt. Hebron. The facility is $50 plus a donation (recommended being $200). Originally proposed price structure: $8 adult, $7 senior and students with ID, $5 children (2-10). Ashleigh will verify food certification and permit. Fees are believed to be around $100.00.
6) SCUBA intro scheduled November 19.
7) Car Show postponed until Spring. We need to check dates for other shows and advertise early.
8) “Cope Course”: date TBD. Cope course is $200 for a day. This fee will be split between attendees
To Be Done:
1) CREW IS TASKED TO COME UP WITH MEETING ACTIVITIES!!!!! Let’s make the meetings fun!!!! The goal is to have business done in 20-30 minutes and then do the activity to make the meeting more fun and informative. Still need to work on this. No update.
2) “Super Activity” Location is being changed. Ashleigh is looking into a closer place such as the Poconos (only 4 hour drive) in Pennsylvania and New England resorts (approximately 10 hour drive) such as Stowe and Killington. We are looking at the week between Christmas and New Years, MKL weekend (Jan 15-18) or Jan 22-25 (Ho. Co. schools long week end).
3) We need to work out the logistics for the spaghetti dinner.
4) Todd found another place. It appears that cost will be around $10-$12. The Coffelts are hoping to order this weekend. We need to finalize, graphics, sizes, colors etc.
5) “Lost Pines” water facility near Broad Creek was offered to the crew as a day event. Need to work out a date if the crew is interested. They also do repelling.
6) Every month Ashleigh wants to set up an activity, a service project and a fundraiser. Tentative activity schedule planned. We still need to decide on meeting activities and service projects. Todd will talk to Donna about a weather presentation in February.
7) We need to set up a new date for the Paint Ball activity. Wes offered another option; instead of going to a center, we could go small scale and use an area by his church. We would need to borrow or buy guns if we did this option. No update
8) Todd will see which dates are available for Cope course. No update
9) The crew wants to contact other crew to set up a network so we can share events.
10) Need to schedule a repelling date with Bob Gallows is the crew is interested. This is a low cost event.
11) Christmas party Dec 22, 2009; need to decide if we are having a crew only or district event.
Fundraising:
1) The crew is considering the following fundraisers: concessions at Navy or Terps, restaurants bake sales, basketball tournaments, spaghetti dinners, basket bingo. Ideas rejected: coffee house, pizza sales, bowling night, car wash.
2) Todd is going to talk to Donna (from Powder horn) about doing concessions at the Navy and Terp games. There is a potential to earn $500 or more per game. Update: Terps are full for the upcoming season. Todd is going to verify some details with Donna
3) Wes mentioned that we could do a car show. This has minimal logistics and good potential to make money. We could have a popular choice award that would receive a trophy. We just need to state that that event is “not insured” on the flyers. Postponed until spring. We need to check on dates of other car shows.
Service projects:
No update. Wes‘s Pastor said there are plenty of things that can be done
around the church including:
1) Extension of the front porch.
2) Landscaping
3) Building of a shed
4) Laying down a laminate floor in the kitchen
area
5) The parking lot needs to be leveled (but I am not sure when because of the
expense)
Todd said that some of these would make good eagle projects for the several
scouts in the troop that are preparing for Eagle.
