Event recap:
Dale and Todd went to the Wilderness First Aid training. Course was pretty good.
Arielle made her presentation at the University of Scouting.
Upcoming Events:
1) The Pamlico Seabase OBX (Outer Banks Adventure) is July 6-12, 2008 (http://www.pamlicoseabase.org/index.html). According to the web page the fee is $325 per person plus expenses for transportation, surfing and shark fishing. A deposit of $50 deposit per person has been submitted; please reimburse Mr. Coffelt in a timely manner if you have not already. Note that the maximum crew size for this trip is 8 people. At this time we have 7 committed (Dale, Lee, Todd, Ashleigh, Arielle, Doug and Colin.) and one highly probable. Guy said that Langston will most likely go. Balance is due my mid April 15 along with a class 3 physical. Todd is still waiting for a confirmed fee for surfing and shark fishing
2) The climbing Wall activity is scheduled for April 2 from 7-9 pm at Life Time Fitness (7220 Lee Deforest Dr. Columbia, MD 21046). Fee is $15. The crew decided to invite scouts from the troop with minimum rank of first class.
3) The district Ad-Venturee is April 4-6 and the Crew is running a water rescue station. We are planning to have the rescue line/bag throw and a Z-Drag competition. We are looking giving candy/chocolates for successful throws and a prize for the Z-Drag winner; possibly carabiners and monkey fist. We still need to set up team size once we see the list of scouts. Dale will get diagram for the required knots.
4) The crew is looking at doing a caving event on November 14-16 2008 activity with the Troop. The crew will take the lead. Note: contact was made with Alan Maddox, but his option was too intense for the proposed activity. The crew should consider working with Mr. Maddox at a future date. Todd and Dale have been researching location and it appears that Laurel Cavern in Pennsylvania is our best choice. In addition to caving, they offer climbing, and several merit badge activities which may be of interest for those in the troop. Dale called and confirmed that they offer camping in November.
5) SCUBA introduction course costs $10 for a 90 minute session. The crew decided to invite scouts from the troop with minimum rank of first class. The scheduled date is May 22, 2008 from 8:30pm to 10 pm. The scheduled swim test is now April 30.
6) The rafting is scheduled for May 16-18 in Ohiopyle PA. A count and $30 deposit is due April 2. We will be using Wilderness Voyageurs as the outfitter. The packages we are doing is for the Lower Yough (class 3-4) for $97. The package includes rafting, raft equipment, meals (2 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 1 dinner), camping and transportation to “put in” and from “take-out”. We need to bring tents and personal gear. Transportation cost from Ellicott City to the outfitter is not included in the price and is estimated to be about $15 per person. More information is on the web page.
7) Venture Quest April 11-13. Several scouts were planning on attending, but up to now we have not been successful in connecting with a local crew. Status is uncertain at this point.
8) We are scheduled to back pack Catoctin with the troop April 18-20.
9) Crews 759 and 851 are planning a canoeing trip on the Potomac River from June 6-8.
To Be Done:
1) Mr. Dale has called and emailed several times about the shot gun range availability on May 3, 4, 10 or 11, but still has not received a response.
2) We need to set up the next Chick-fil-A fundraiser date. We are looking at April 17
3) Todd is going to contact Tammy Cinnato. The troop is interested in doing first aid and CPR recertification as well as new training. The troop originally expressed interest in April 15 and 22, but these dates are probably too soon.
Fundraising:
1) “Krispy Kreme”: Most of the 50 cards were sold. There are only a few outstanding. We need to wrap up this fundraiser.
Announcements:
Gabe will be starting his eagle project in the near future. The proposed project is to build flying squirrel boxes for Fort Smallwood Park. Gabe is asking the crew for assistance.
Upcoming meeting:
Next meeting is April 4 at the Ad-Venturee. Members from Crew 851 plan on attending to discuss the upcoming canoe trip.
Future meeting: April 20 and May 4
Ashleigh is tasked with finding a fun activity for the next meeting at the Hebron House which is scheduled for April 20.
